Corporate History

​Founded in 1959 under the name Mathematica, Mathtech (www.mathtechinc.com​). The company is headquartered in Falls Church, VA, and is staffed by over 50 professionals. Mathtech evolved as a division of Mathematica and became a subsidiary of thecompany in 1976. Acquired by Lockheed Martin (then Martin Marietta) in 1983, the company was then taken private in 1986 and has remained an independent corporate entity ever since.

From its inception, Mathtech has successfully provided a range of high-level analytical consulting services and in-depth technical studies to worldwide industries and governments on a broad range of complex issues. These capabilities include project management services for large-scale government hardware and IT projects, with services ranging from strategic planning, system architecture, and validation/verification of system performance. Within its varied business profile, Mathtech holds a GSA contract, a Navy Seaport contract, ane-FAST contract with the FAA, and contracts with a number of states, including New Jersey, Maryland, Minnesota, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York.

Manufacturing Initiatives

Within the past few years, hardware system development was added to the company’s core business as part of an organic diversification strategy. This initiative led to the creation of the Integrated Communications Systems Group (ICSG), which is also located in Falls Church where it functions as an independent hardware development entity within the Mathtech corporate structure. The division is staffed with multi-disciplined managers, engineers and scientists who are responsible for the design, development, production, quality and sustainment of military intercom systems.

The history of ICSG has evolved from Mathtech’s 50-plus year record of successful organic growth, starting with the award of a manufacturing contract to supply the Navy with an upgraded multi-station intercom system for the new E-2D Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft. The company was selected for the program based on an earlier study for the Navy involving supportability and readiness problems affecting the intercom system aboard the E-2C AEW aircraft, the E-2D’s predecessor.

AN/AYQ-27 Intercom System Development

The study took the form of a lifecycle cost analysis of the E-2C’s AN/AIC-14 intercom system, which had beenintended for “forward fit” aboard the updated E-2D. Following a process ofevaluation, Mathtech was contracted to redesign the AN/AIC-14 using a uniqueintercom architecture as a baseline. The objective was to create a softwaredriven, network centric system that could be ergonomically scaled within a modular, open Ethernet design to streamline platform communication, whilemeeting the constraints of size, weight, power and ownership cost.

Following the customary process of design, development, test and evaluation thesystem known as the AN/AYQ-27 was certified and accepted by the Navy. Today,the program is in the production phase, and systems are being delivered to thefleet.

ICSG remains the only hardware division within the Mathtech family. As such,the division continues to benefit from the core analytical background thatcompany has developed and nurtured over the past half century. Going forward,the division plans to market derivative versions of the AN/AYQ-27 architecture aspossible solutions for applications in other sectors of the military as well as inhomeland security and law enforcement applications.
